How to Play
The computer has chosen a 6-letter word. You need to guess what word it has chosen
by entering other 6-letter words. When you enter a word, the computer will put it in
the table below the blanks and tell you how many letters in your word are in the same
location in its word. For example, if the computer's secret word is
LETTER and you enter
LICKED, the
computer will respond with a
2 since the 'L' and the
'E' are in the same position in both words. Click here to display an
example.
To help you keep track of which letters you're sure of and which you've
eliminated, you can mark letters in the table as follows:
- correct -- hold down the CTRL Key while clicking; the letter will turn red and be entered at the top of the table.
- not correct -- click on the letter; it will turn gray.
- maybe -- hold down the ALT Key while clicking; the letter will return to the original green.
When you think you have determined one of the letters in the computer's word,
enter it at the top of the table. When you have the complete word, test it by
entering it as your next guess. A score of 6 is a winner! When the word is revealed, you can click on it
to look up its meaning at
Dictionary.com.
If you want to start entering words in a second column so you don't have to keep scrolling to see
the score, click on the 'add new column' button.
It is not necessary to enter the words in upper case and the computer will
not check your spelling. You are on the honor system to only choose real words,
and to avoid proper nouns and foreign words.
I have tried to eliminate any words from the computer's list that would be
objectionable or that aren't found at Dictionary.com. If you stumble on any
more such words, please let me know. Thanks!
My family used to play this game while waiting to be served at restaurants. One person
would think of a word and the rest would try to guess it. I hope you enjoy it as much
as we did! -- Anne (cooperag (@) cooperis.com)
